Specialists in Custom Ruggedized Power Supply Designs
Viable Power specializes in the design of custom ruggedized power supply units for the military aerospace, defense and naval sectors. For more than 25 years we have been supplying our customers with quality products, addressing their specific needs, whether that be a particular performance characteristic, packaging constraint or application environment or a combination of all three. We are well-known specialists in rapid turnaround, custom-designed high reliability power conversion solutions
Engineering of Custom Designs
Viable Power’s design team has years of experience in the power supply design and development fields. That experience has been accrued whilst developing numerous power supply and power control products varying from basic 5W miniature power supplies to highly complex fully featured Ruggedized Power Supply designs.
All our products are custom designed for specific requirements. We are familiar with requirements from multiple standards including MIL-STD-704, MIL-STD 1399 Section 300, MIL-STD-1275, which detail the interface requirements for airborne, naval and military vehicles applications respectively, plus MIL-STD-461 for Electromagnetic Compatibility, MIL-STD-810 and RTCA-DO-160 for Test methods and MIL-HDBK-217F N2 for reliability. We use a wide range of computer aided design (CAD) tools for drafting, for circuit simulation, schematic capture, PCB layout and thermal analysis.

Manufacturing and Testing
Viable Power’s manufacturing capabilities cover 7,500 square feet within our Pointe-Claire, Quebec facility. It has been laid out and furnished with all the necessary manufacturing and test equipment to address the needs of our customers. This includes wave solder and printed circuit board washing machinery, wire cutting, stripping and crimping machines, electronic microscope inspection tools, electrodynamic vibration system, high ramp rate temperature cycling and humidity test chambers, and Automated Test Equipment (ATE).
Our team is dedicated and highly skilled in all manner of electronic and mechanical assembly techniques from component and wire preparation, hand and wave soldering, crimping, cleaning, coating, potting and adhesive applications.
Our production staff is IPC-J-STD-001 trained, with all work performed to
Class 3 levels.
Mechanical assembly is done in accordance with the guidelines of
MIL-HDBK-454.
All inspection is performed to IPC-A-610 Class 3 by certified inspectors.
Our team of test technicians perform acceptance tests on every ruggedized power supply unit shipped. We have a mixture of manual test sites and proprietary custom automated test equipment racks for those units with higher production throughput.
All our environmental stress screening tests are done in house using our electrodynamic shaker (Thermotron), capable of performing 3 axis vibration testing, and our two thermal chambers (Cincinnati Sub Zero) for high ramp rate temperature cycle testing as specified for temperatures in the range of -65°C to +190°C. Our proprietary ESS control hardware can test and monitor up to 4 units at a time whether that be for vibration or for thermal cycling.

Quality Management System
Viable Power is ISO9001:2015 and AS9100:2016 certified. Our ongoing commitment to certification to these internationally recognized quality management systems (QMS) has allowed us to realize improved customer satisfaction, better decision-making, engaged employees, improved supplier relationships and a systematic cycle of continuous improvement.
All our processes from business acquisition through to order fulfillment are meticulously defined within our QMS. Carefully selected metrics and key performance indicators allow us to track our own performance and that of our suppliers. Receiving quality material on time allows Viable Power to meet our commitments to deliver quality products on time to our customers.
Our product manufacturing starts with a verification of the design standard, ensuring all drawings are formally released through the configuration management process. Continuous improvement to our products is maintained via the design change request and engineering change order process. Any impacts to qualification are carefully considered and if necessary, repeat qualification testing may be performed prior to change incorporation.
Our proprietary enterprise resource planning (ERP) system runs on FileMaker™ and fully integrates our business processes, combining request for proposals, quotations, customer purchase orders, product drawings, BOMs, material purchase orders, NCRs, Failure Reports, manufacturing process travelers, certificates of conformance, commercial invoicing and shipping. It provides a fully integrated system to manage all aspects of the manufacturing cycle and carefully control the “As built” versus “As designed” configuration of each product.
